Achieving compliance with the relevant EU standards in terms of recovery materials and energy, diversion of biodegradable waste from landfills and adequate final disposal of waste.

Reducing environmental and health risks in highly contaminated lands. With regards to the oil and gas project, the projects in the JASPERS assignment involve improvement in the operation of the systems and security of supply.

Compliance with the relevant standards in terms of emissions from large combustion plants.

JASPERS assignments in the solid waste and energy sector
A total of 49 assignments were completed in 2010, about twice as many as in 2009. A total of 16 projects were approved during the year: nine major projects approved by the European Commission and seven non-major projects approved by national authorities.
Assignments completed in 2010 also included the closure of non - compliant landfills and two horizontal tasks in Cyprus: a seminar on CBA and funding gap analysis and another one on project applications. The former was of particular importance for the beneficiaries of major projects in Cyprus (Nicosia and Limassol landfills, Rural Waste Water, Limassol highway and Nicosia cultural centre).
